Do you need to build a potting station? What? You do not have one? Oh, dear me. We need to fix that. By now, if you read How To Use Space Wisely and How To Build a Kindling Bin, then you probably know what is coming next. Right? Right. The infamous POTTING STATION! My favorite place to be in the whole wide world is my Potting Station. Okay, so “Potting Station” is not a proper noun, but I just made it one because well … that Potting Station is where the real business of growing food begins, the the origin of all germination, the loins from which all garden life springs, the Mother of Cornucopia! Okay, stopping with the drama — you get the point. (That was fun!)
Of all the wonderful things that my very handy and innovative husband (whom I absolutely adore) has done, built, bought, or made for me in the last year … THIS one is my absolute favorite. (Just in case that was not perfectly clear.) It took him maybe an hour … if that. We got the counter top from my sweet, generous in-laws when they remodeled their kitchen. Eddie bought the 2x4s for the frame and (unlike the kindling bin where he used nails) he picked up a box of 3″ dry wall screws. Maybe they should have been wood screws but dry wall screws seem to have a better grip and, as Eddie says, “They are dirt cheap.”
He built the frame almost exactly the same way he built the frame for the kindling bin, BUT he added two extra vertical supports and then three cross supports that serve as shelf rests (potting stations MUST have shelves). Also, there was no base frame, just the top frame, the vertical supports & shelf rests. Follow along with the photos below and it should make sense.
First (like with the kindling bin) clear your space, measure it (L x W x D), and write down those numbers. Measure, cut, and stack your frame’s lumber based on those measurements.
Here are few close ups just for fun!
And that is my Potting Station!!! Now, don’t you want one? Go build it! And get your world organized!
Eddie ROCKS! Don’t you think?
