Gift Ideas For The Home Food Preserver

If you have a home food preserver in your family, you will know it. This is someone who would rather be in the garden or the kitchen or at a farmers’ market than anywhere else in the world.  On gift-giving occasions, they often give gifts of food including canned fruits, jelly & preserves, complete “meals-in-jar,” brownie and biscuit mixes, pickles, salsa, and sauces — all made from scratch with their own hands and they are quite proud of that!  But what they ask for are things like canning jars, pressure cookers, and quality knives.

Often, simply asking for ideas is easiest way to find out what they need, but one thing is FOR SURE, many of us are not particularly interested in perfume, jewelry, DVDs, or clothes (except maybe aprons, garden gloves, and muck boots).  THIS is the easiest person in the world to gift and here are the things that are SURE to please any home food preserver! (CORRECTION: Perfume, jewelry, DVDs and clothes are not necessarily out!  As one reader suggested, “I still love those things, too!”  Okay, maybe it’s just me!  You decide!  Still, these are sure to please!)

Canning Jars and Accessories – You cannot go wrong with a couple cases of canning jars.  They are used in virtually ALL methods of home food preservation and there are never enough of them.  Since canning lids can be used only once, a constant supply of lids is always appreciated.  You could order the reusable Tattler lids, but be sure your recipient uses them first.  Many home food preservers don’t necessarily trust them.  The jar sealers are for jarring up dry or dehydrated food and a vacuum sealer is also needed for that.   You can find that in the next section.

Kitchen Gadgets — Now I could go on and on with an ENDLESS list of kitchen gadgets and I should say that most folks already have most of the basics like measuring spoons, cutting boards, and colanders.  However, as a home food preserver, I often have several projects going all at once and often wished I had an extra set of everything just so I don’t have to take time to wash something before I can use it for something else.   Personally, I prefer to wait until all the work is done and wash everything all at once.  So I will just show you some of the more common gadgets along with a few that only a home food preserver would think of … like extra timers (just the one on the stove is never enough) and waterproof food thermometers.

Home Food Preserver Gifts Under $100

Most home food preservers already have a water bath canner or maybe even a pressure canner, but for home preservers just starting out, these are the big investments that must be made in order to get started. I will include our recommended tools for canning, dehydrating, freezing, and fermenting! And if your home preserver does any one or two of these things, I can assure you they would love to try the others as well. Why not get them started? Many of these items can be used with ALL the preservation methods. Note: Roaster ovens are PERFECT for large batch cooking (like tomato sauce) and to keep canning jars hot without taking up stove top space. That is a GREAT gift that makes the job so much easier.

Home Food Preserver Gifts Over $100

Okay, this list is for the big spenders … but let me tell you, these are absolute necessities. I mean, if you really want to make a home food preserver happy and they don’t already have these, then this is your ticket. However, if your home food preserver already has a KitchenAid stand mixer, then be sure to scroll down to the last list for KitchenAid’s must-have accessories!

And some must-have KitchenAid accessories:

I hope you found something here that’s perfect for your home food preserver and in your budget as well! If YOU are the home food preserver in the family, why not share this post with those who typically buy for you?  There is something for every budget here!  Got more ideas? Add them in the comments!
