Fresh. Organic. Garlic. Nothing in the world quite like it. We put garlic in almost everything and yes, of course, it is best fresh! We grow our own (in rather large quantities considering there is only two of us) and what we cannot use fresh, we dehydrate & powder (find out how right here). It never gets wasted. It gets added to my Pepper Powders, packaged as gifts, and sprinkled in almost all my recipes (except the sweet stuff!) MMMMMMMMmmmmm. Love that Fresh. Organic. Garlic! But now … we get bigger, better garlic!

We recently placed an order with Urban Farmer Seeds for Elephant Garlic & a package of cumin seeds and I think I have a new best friend…….
We have not grown either of them yet (we will keep you posted) but we are very excited to see how it will do here in our soil and in our climate. I mean, LOOK at the size of these bad boys! They are rumored to average 3-4 cloves per bulb at maturity and as big as these cloves are … well, processing garlic for the dehydrator will be much less painstaking work for me! That is Eddie’s hand … a grown man’s hand. And I know it is a little hard to see in the second photo, but just two cloves weigh in at a whooping 4 ounces! My biggest bulb of normal garlic last season was 3.7 ounces.
Why does that matter? Well, here is why … last year I planted normal garlic (not this mammoth-sized Elephant Garlic). It takes FOREVER to skin, cut, and process garlic when the cloves are normal sized. But when 2 cloves weigh MORE than an entire normal bulb, your processing time is a fraction of what it used to be. Here is what 4 ounces of normal garlic looks like. Tell me, which you would rather stand there & skin? The two cloves above or the 20+ cloves below?
And before you say it, yes, I know about the video were the guy skins an entire garlic bulb by shaking it inside of two metal mixing bowls. I have done it. A) It works only marginally and B) it bruises the HECK out of your garlic. And yes, I know Elephant garlic is milder and it is related to the leek. BUT once dehydrated, flavors get concentrated. So this does the trick for me.
Digressing, I just wanted to tell that not only am I completely impressed with this new variety of garlic (and looking forward to saving TONS of time & effort next harvest), but just as important, I am completely impressed with my new seed provider, the Urban Farmer. See their Safe Seed Pledge right here. That alone got my attention! Also, customer service was responsive and my order came in just a couple days. Packaging was safe for the product, but not overkill … not too much waste to recycle. And the price was right! In fact, I was SO impressed with the Urban Farmer that I decided to become an affiliate and I don’t take things like that lightly. I don’t send MY readers to a vendor that I don’t completely trust!
So that is my take! Next time you need stuff for your garden, be sure to go check out the Urban Farmer!
